It was a pair of her mother’s earrings that helped Mabel Chong’s family escape poverty in rural China and immigrate to Hong Kong when she was a child. Today, as a successful jewelry designer, Chong creates pieces that honor her mother’s sacrifice in a style she calls uncivilized elegance. Indeed, the simple strands and thin spikes found throughout her line, recall a sort of rustic luxury. Best of all, a number of pieces are under $100.
